US Navy

We provided advice and guidance on all community relations activity for the US Navy based in South West England. The US Navy has a strong ethos of volunteering and so an opportunity existed to develop a Community Relations Strategy but work had to integrate with the operational mission and be in line with the US Navy's ethos.

The Context

US Navy, Royal Navy and RAF staff were based at the Joint Maritime Facility, RAF St Mawgan until September 2009. JMF reported to multiple commanders in the UK, Italy and the USA. Any activities would involve bi national and tri service personnel and would have to be integrated with mission responsibilities. JMF had a great " can do" approach and individuals built strong relationships during their deployment.

The Solution

A planned programme of activities was undertaken each year. This often exceeded the equivalent of 4,000 person hours a year. Projects could range from visits by the Commanding Officer and his staff, requiring advice on protocol and traditions to volunteering projects that could really make a difference. These projects included digging out after the Boscastle floods, helping at local schools, building a swan pontoon, laying paths, clearing grounds at charity centres, attending a local point to point organising a senior citizens Christmas lunch and attending many parades and civic functions. In order to support the Royal Cornwall Show the US Navy Sixth Fleet band were flown in two years running.

“Sue synchronised and planned all Joint Maritime Facility community relations activity. This included civic and military interaction at international, national and local level, providing sage counsel and keen media relations support. With over 100 events a year I simply could not have done my job without her.”
Captain W.C Stacia Jr, United States Navy.
