Team South West Events for the London 2012 Olympic Games and Paralympic Games

We need to make sure that  decision makers across the public, private and voluntary sectors were involved in developing the strategy to develop a lasting legacy from the London 2012 Games.

The Context

The South West England Directorate of the 2012 Games needed to develop a legacy strategy that would provide a route map and action plan for a range of organisations in the region. London 2012 needed to inform the region to encourage and inspire people to take part and become involved – in sport, as volunteers, and as suppliers.  A large target audience! Chocolate Dog Marketing Services organised the Summits, Road Shows and visits by key London 2012 staff such as Lord Coe with the brief to secure maximum media profile.

The Solution

Two South West England Summits were developed to as part of the consultation process inviting key partners to develop the vision and legacy from the London 2012 Games. Keynote speakers that included Sebastian Coe, Olympians and Paralympian and the Minister for the Olympics attended summits. These events contributed directly to the South West England Legacy Strategy.

Four regional London 2012 Road Shows were organised to make sure that the key messages were cascaded across the South West.  With such high profile ambassadors, it produced maximum media profile.  Activities included:

  • opening the Biomechanics facility at the University of Bath
  • discussions with the business community in Cornwall
  • meeting 350 young people at the College of St Mark and St John at Plymouth
  • meeting young people at Swindon
  • opening Hartpury College's international indoor arena and meeting Paralympian athletes
  • attending the Volvo Youth ISAF Sailing World Championships at Weymouth and Portland National Sailing Academy
  • opening Weymouth College community sports facility.
