Barnet College - managing reputational risk

Barnet College needed to manage a challenging and sensitive estates development programme. Communications consultancy was required to provide detailed advice, guidance, and management of a potential reputational risk issue.

The Context

Barnet College faced a complex situation with College Buildings as it sought to secure £50million of funding to develop a new campus site. To fund the investment it needed to sell a much loved, but Victorian building and secure temporary replacement in North London Business Park as part of a long-term estates vision.

The Solution

A communications campaign ensured that staff and students were consulted at the start and contributed to the vision of a new campus and the facilities that were needed. Key stakeholders across the public and private sector were also consulted to inform the vision. The new campus would be located in a residential area. One concern raised was transport and parking so after the consultation, the College implemented its own transport strategy.

Regular communications kept staff and students updated and regular PR highlighted good news stories. Enrolments increased, as did student retention.

"I have used Sue to assist me at Barnet College to bring a strategic focus to our Marketing activities and to assist in our communications. Sue has a wealth of experience in both the public and private sector, and indeed has assisted before when I was Principal at Grimsby. Sue is able to pick up the brief, identify the issues and quickly implement change. Sue has the knowledge to quickly identify strengths and weakness in our operation and provide practical advice and guidance.

She works well with members of the Marketing Staff and assists the Senior Management Team and has been extremely effective in helping Barnet College."
